As a Main Street America Affiliate, Portales MainStreet is part of a national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. Our mission is that the Portales MainStreet Program will, in partnership with merchants and community, act as a catalyst for the development of business and the enhancements for quality of life through the revitalization of the downtown Portales area, driven by a sense of urgency and importance.
Our vision is to continue the development of downtown Portales into a beautiful, restored and rejuvenated historic area that invites and encourages the development of current and future business through professional and cultural endeavors.
The idea of a downtown action group came about in 1996 when members of the community wanted to make a difference. After years of working downtown, the official Non Profit status of 501 c 3 was awarded to Portales MainStreet in 2003. Portales MainStreet operates with a volunteer board consisting of no more than 20 local members. Our Board of Directors range from business owners, City officials, citizens, and more! Aside from our core Board of Directors, Portales MainStreet pulls volunteers from many other organization to help accomplish projects and goals.
